Daytona’s Just A Fantasy
January 16th, 2008 by Darren (NASCAR Geek)I’m feeling very Diecast Dude this morning. Jerry is the master at relating some of his posts to obscure bands or songs. As I write this post I’m reminded of the Aldo Nova song ‘Fantasy’.
It’s either that or make the cruder reference to another type of ‘fantasy’ activity that scoffers of Fantasy Games throw out from time to time.
So forget all that you see

11 of the top 13 cars in the day 5 morning session of Daytona testing were Toyota’s.
This testing session is the single car runs that more accurately reflect a car’s speed capability. No drafting and sucking up on the car in front of you.
Just driver, the pedal and the track.
So does this mean that the Toyota’s are really gonna do it this year? Not when you listen to the analysts.
The Daytona testing sessions are like being head-over-heels in love with someone that doesn’t love you back. You want to put stock into the whole experience. Make long-term commitments based on your perceptions. Yet in the end, THE RACE turns out to be so much different.
Some of this week’s buzz:
- Jr. Nation is in a pre-season tizzy over him being at the top of the charts.
- Toyota lovers (or haters) are talking about the Toyota speeds.
- NASCAR rookie Dario Franchitti is on top of the combined speed charts.
- Fantasy players want to use the testing statistics to determine their Daytona or season line-ups.
I wish I knew where to draw the line on what these testing sessions really mean.
Other than hearing the roar of the engine and seeing barely-dressed, primer coated cars, I don’t know who is holding back, who is working on handling or who is working on speed?
History shows that it is not the fasted car that wins the race.
What do you take away from Daytona testing?

Daytona testing. Well, it’s nice to have the “winter” ending. It’s cool to speculate on what you see happening, and anticipate the season.
But…it’s not an indicator of things to come. The teams who had the advantage working with the Car Of Tomorrow…er, Today…last year… Oh hell, you know what I mean.
The teams with the more developed programs last year will dominate the first third of the season, with the other teams taking copious notes from behind them.
Toyota… sophomore year. Moving to Gibbs, gives them a good chance to take Daytona. The speed showing this early doesn’t hurt, y’know… But, Daytona will be won by the driver.
You need to be great at drafting. You need to see the air…
