NASCAR Car Number Countdown - #16

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

nascar number 16The 2008 season is “Go Time” for quite a few drivers in the NASCAR Cup series. In the Roush Fenway Racing organization, “Go Time” just barely describes the situation. Jack Roush has announced that he will decide during this season which team on his roster of five will get cut in order to bring his organization in line with NASCAR’s limit of 4 teams in 2010. Matt Kenseth certainly can relax and breathe easy that his seat is there for him in the #17 for as long as he wants to stay. Carl Edwards can also rest easy since he has performed well in his three full years on the circuit. In each of those seasons he has finished in the top 12 in season points with Roush. Now one of Roush’s other drivers (Jamie McMurray, David Ragan, Greg Biffle) are the more likely candidates to be leaving the organization. However, the driver of the #16 may not get a pink slip, but instead could choose to leave on his own.

Stats for all cars running the #16:

nascar driver greg biffle

  • Number of Races: 823
  • Number of Wins: 25
  • Number of Top 5s: 117
  • Number of Top 10s: 232
  • Number of Poles: 21
  • Number of Drivers: 90

Spotlight Subject: Driver Greg Biffle

Of the three Roush drivers most likely to leave it is my opinion that Greg Biffle certainly has the most options available to him over the next season. Roush’s team president, Geoff Smith, has stated that they’re currently re-negotiating the contracts for both Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle which are set to expire at the end of this season. I look for Carl’s contract to be wrapped up first and fairly quickly, thus freeing him up to move on and focus on the 26 races to the Chase. What Greg decides to do will then either allow McMurray and Ragan to breathe a sigh of relief, or gasp for air as they’ll understand it’s one of them that will be going. (more…)

NASCAR Car Number Countdown - #17

nascar number 17Near the beginning of our Car Number Countdown to the Daytona 500 we put the spotlight on one of the more recent females to race in NASCAR, Shawna Robinson. Today we’re at #17 and we’re going to turn on the high-beams for the spotlight and shine it all the way back to 1949 & 1950 for the featured driver.

Stats for all cars running the #17:

nascar driver sara christian

  • Number of Races: 1,302
  • Number of Wins: 61
  • Number of Top 5s: 277
  • Number of Top 10s: 476
  • Number of Poles: 41
  • Number of Drivers: 91

Spotlight Subject: Driver Sara Christian

Granted, Sara Christian had a very short stint in NASCAR racing. She raced a total of 7 races scoring 1 top five and 2 top tens. She had total earnings of $810 and ironically that’s nearly $1 per lap for all laps completed in her career. Though she only had a few starts, Sara made her mark by setting some record firsts in the sport. Not only was Sara Christian the first woman to race in Cup (known as Strictly Stock back then), she actually raced in the inaugural race in June of 1949. The first race of the season was actually held at Charlotte Speedway, not Daytona as we’re accustomed to now. It was a 33 car field and after starting in 13th, Sara finished in 14th position when her ‘47 Ford suffered overheating issues. Sara’s next race would be in Daytona at the Daytona Beach course. Here she would enter her #17 Ford into the 40 lap (166 miles) race on the beach. She would not be the only female to be racing that day though. Female drivers Ethel Mobley and Louise Smith would also be racing. It would not only be the first race in which there were three nascar driver sara christian female drivers, but Sara and her husband Frank would also become the only married couple to compete against one another in a NASCAR race. Her best career finish would be a 5th at Heidelberg Raceway in Pittsburgh. It would be the only top 5 finish by a woman in NASCAR. Sara would compete in 6 of the 8 races held in 1949 and she would finish 13th in the season points.

Sara Christian would be honored as the United States Drivers Association Woman Driver of the Year in 1949. After making only one start in 1950, Sara Christian retired from racing. Born in Dahlonega, Georgia and passing away in 1980, she was inducted into the Georgia Automobile Racing Hall of Fame in 2004.

Is it Dale Jarrett Day on OneBadWheel.com?

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

dale jarrett's pay the fan racing gameAfter working on spotlighting car #18 in the Car Number Countdown to the Daytona 500 I thought I’d share a little with you about the only pay-to-play internet fantasy game I’ve ever played in. The name of the game is Pay The Fan and they have both a NASCAR Racing division and NFL Football division. Dale Jarrett is the co-owner of this site with Terry Bradshaw and I personally played in the racing division game last year. I didn’t do all that great, but I had a great time. Last year was the game’s inaugural season, and it was only a partial season consisting of the Chase races. So, the 2008 season will be the first time players will have the chance to play an entire race season! Last year the winner in the racing division took home the grand prize of $150,000 for a ten race game. Second place won $75,000 and third place took home $50,000. There were prize amounts all the way back to the 22nd spot at $1,000 for their finish. For the 2008 season they will have over $700,000 in payouts! Part of the payouts are weekly prizes of $5,000 to be split between the top 3 finishers for that week! So even if you’re not leading the game over the course of the season, everyone has the chance to win a part of at least one of the weekly $5,000 prizes! Also, Dale Jarrett himself posts expert advice before each race as the season goes along!

Help a Brother Out!

So, while I KNOW you’re playing our Champs, Chumps & Sleepers game to try and win that Dale Jarrett prize package, I highly encourage you to play Dale Jarrett’s Pay The Fan fantasy game too! Please, since I know you want to help me out, if you decide to join Pay The Fan consider doing me a favor and be referred by me. To do so, either click on the logo above, or this link, or just go to PayTheFan.com and enter “739″ as a Referral Code when you sign up!

Once you’re signed up, be sure to visit the “Leagues” section (simliar to our “Groups” sections in the Champs, Chumps & Sleepers game) and click on the “Find” tab. From there, search for and join us in the public league that I’ve created: “OneBadWheel.com - Statistics for Racing Junkies” In that game I am “Team OneBadWheel.com” and Darren will also be registering a team as well [will update post with his name once I know it].
THANKS!

NASCAR Car Number Countdown - #18

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

nascar number 18Imagine if the name of this website wasn’t OneBadWheel.com, and the subject matter was not NASCAR related. Instead, imagine that the website is OneBadClub.com with a focus on helping you with your fantasy golf game. I wonder if the majority of this site’s regular readers would still be visiting this site. Regardless whether you would or not, we’re at #18 in the Car Number Countdown to the Daytona 500 and today’s spotlight subject could just as easily be on the hypothetical OneBadClub.com as he is on OneBadWheel.com. So perhaps you would be reading about him anyway.

Stats for all cars running the #18:

nascar driver dale jarrett

  • Number of Races: 1,033
  • Number of Wins: 23
  • Number of Top 5s: 146
  • Number of Top 10s: 307
  • Number of Poles: 28
  • Number of Drivers: 92

Spotlight Subject: Driver Dale Jarrett

Surely I can’t be the only one to have sat daydreaming and pondering, “If I could be good and famous at something, what would it be?” A musician, singer, or maybe an actor? Those are all likely common first choices. For me though, it has most always be to either be a professional golfer or a race car driver. While racing is certainly the more adrenaline pumping choice of the two, golfing does have some nice advantages. (more…)

NASCAR Car Number Countdown - #19

Monday, January 28th, 2008

nascar number 19So what do you do when your race teams haven’t been performing up to expected levels by the media, fans, or even yourself? Well, you call in reinforcements to help in a sport where costs have gone to the moon. This new partner can maybe equip the cars with ski racks on the roof. They might give the pit crew a few soccer (foot?) balls to practice their coordination with. Or maybe take your old Cup cars (now that the COT is here full time) and put them on one of your newly associated used car lots. Don’t forget to raise the hoods up, tie off some helium balloons, and write “Free Steaks with Purchase of Stock Car” on the windshield in multi-colored writing. Top it all off with a huge inflatable hockey player on top of the sales office to help draw in the passing traffic. After all, if an inflatable gorilla on the roof will bring in customers, surely an inflatable Canadian hockey goalie would do even better, right?

Okay, so that’s meant as a little humor. The truth is, one man views the addition of his new ownership/management partner as a true hero to the team’s business operations. I can hear Jim Carrey now from the movie Liar, Liar, “Here he comes to save the daaayyy!!!” While not directly contributing to the competition side, this new partner will bring in extensive financial, management, and marketing experience to help get three teams back on top. I for one hope so as I would love to see the rise of a 3-car team from mediocrity and lost direction to reach the levels needed to compete with Hendrick’s and Gibbs’ organizations. At #19 in the Car Number Countdown to the Daytona 500 we’ll look at this new hero to Ray Evernham.

Stats for all cars running the #19:

nascar owner george gillett

  • Number of Races: 1,176
  • Number of Wins: 3
  • Number of Top 5s: 52
  • Number of Top 10s: 219
  • Number of Poles: 8
  • Number of Drivers: 83

Spotlight Subject: Owner George Gillett

George Gillett doesn’t just bring money to Gillett Evernham Motorsports, though he has made (and lost) his fair share of millions in his lifetime. Gillett brings to the table his vast experience of handling a business’s operations and financial aspects. This will free Ray Evernham to get back to what he does best, and what he has seemingly lost focus on over the last few years, the competition side of his organization. In part, the lack of attention came from trying to keep the business side of the team running. George Gillett plans to fix that and give Ray Evernham a real come-back story. (more…)

NASCAR Car Number Countdown - #20

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

nascar number 20While Preseason Thunder certainly helped build a little more anticipation for the Daytona 500, for me nothing really says “it’s almost time” than the running of the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona. As of this posting the teams are in the final hour of the race. Occasional NASCAR driver Scott Pruett is leading the DP class, and drivers Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch have been representing NASCAR drivers very well too. Yes, I’m getting excited about Speedweeks in Daytona and the fact that we’re now only 20 days away from the Daytona 500 itself. Even before the Great American Race, we’ll have the Budweiser Shootout and the Gatorade Duels! Yes my friends, we are getting close! Therefore, at car #20 for the Countdown to the Daytona 500 we’ll spotlight a driver who actually won the Daytona 500 in a car #20.

Stats for all cars running the #20:

nascar driver marvin panch

  • Number of Races: 767
  • Number of Wins: 33
  • Number of Top 5s: 133
  • Number of Top 10s: 283
  • Number of Poles: 10
  • Number of Drivers: 81

Spotlight Subject: Driver Marvin Panch

In yesterday’s spotlight on Wood Brothers Racing, I listed some of the names of drivers to run races for that organization. Marvin Panch was another such driver to at one time drive for the Wood Brothers. Marvin got that opportunity after first capturing a Daytona 500 win for Smokey Yunick. It was the 1961 Daytona 500, and Marvin would drive a one year old #20 Pontiac in the race. However, Marvin’s older Pontiac was running just as good, if not better, than the new cars. He finished second in one of the qualifier races, and was running second in the Daytona 500 with 13 laps to go. (more…)

NASCAR Car Number Countdown - #21

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

nascar number 21Just as the #43 will forever be associated with Richard Petty, so too will the #21 be forever tied with a family owned and operated team in NASCAR racing. This family has had some of the biggest names in racing drive their cars over the years. When considering who to spotlight for car #21 in the Car Number Countdown to the Daytona 500, it was nearly impossible for me to single out just one of those drivers in history. This being the case in part because the #21 itself has been with this one team for most all of NASCAR’s Cuper Series history.

Stats for all cars running the #21:

nascar team wood brothers logo

  • Number of Races: 1,307
  • Number of Wins: 90
  • Number of Top 5s: 313
  • Number of Top 10s: 498
  • Number of Poles: 110
  • Number of Drivers: 75

Spotlight Subject: Wood Brothers Racing

I knew that the Wood Brothers have been in racing for a very long time. But until I actually looked back at their time in Cup series history, I had no clue just how far back they went. If someone would have asked me, I would have guessed thirty years, maybe a bit more. Virginia born brothers Glen and Leonard Wood would start their race team in 1950. Their first race in Cup series would be with the #21 at Martinsville in 1953. (more…)

NASCAR Car Number Countdown - #22

Friday, January 25th, 2008

nascar number 22I was born in Ohio, but in my mid-teens my parents moved to Florida. Around ten years ago I moved to the Carolinas. Thus, some of my redneck friends here refer to me as a “half back.” That’s alright though, because a couple of my southern redneck friends are pretty darn cool, even if they both have the same name (Kevin H. & Kevin D.). One of them even has a PHD! These are the kinda guys who have killed quite a few brains cells with all the Budweiser they’ve consumed. They’ve drank so much of the beer that they’ll swear to you they paid for the Budweiser blimp. That said, in the short time that I’ve known Kevin & Kevin they’ve proven to be very good friends. One year we were short on income and couldn’t afford to have heat in the house for the winter. These two cats, and another named Bob, showed up at the house one Sat. morning with pickup trucks, a trailer and chain saws and said, “C’mon, we gonna git you sum wood.” (Note, if it wasn’t for the trailer and chain saws, I would have thought they were taking me to a peeler bar!) They used their gas and spent their entire Saturday off to take me out to a friend of theirs who had a large chunk of wooded land. We spent the day cutting and splitting wood for me and my family to burn in the fireplace. We loaded up the the trucks and trailer with the wood and hauled it back to the house where they helped unload and stack it so that it would stay dry. None of them wanted or would accept money for it. The most they’d let me do was buy them a sandwich. Another example was this past summer when my lawn mower broke down and the grass was getting kinda tall. Kevin H. loads up his mower and sneaks over to the house one day when he knows I’m out running errands. I pull up to the house as he’s making the final 5 passes in the yard. With friends like this, I have no choice but to spotlight Kevin H.’s favorite driver now that we’re at #22 in the car number countdown to the Daytona 500. This guy will do about anything for you. He has offered to let me use his PHD before. That didn’t make sense to me before, and I honestly just chalked it up to the dead brain cells from the Budweiser. However, after listening to the John Boy & Billy Show this morning, I now know his PHD is a Post Hole Digger. Rednecks, gotta love ‘em!

Stats for all cars running the #22:

  • Number of Drivers: 63

Spotlight Subject: Driver Ward Burton

Ward Burton is one of many famous brothers in NASCAR racing, such as Darrel and Michael Waltrip; Rusty, Kenny and Mike Wallace; or Kurt and Kyle Busch. Ward is the older brother to Richard Childress Racing’s driver of the #31 car, Jeff Burton. (more…)
