David Calls Out Goliath with a Smack to the Head

Look out Terry Blount! The Diecast Dude is imploding…or would that be exploding?
I’ve got to agree with Jerry that your current level of idiocy has eclipsed even prior bumblings.
The Dude’s current post ‘Terry Blount Dares To Be Stupid (And Rips Me Off In The Process)’ will go down as a classic!
Now Jerry…is there something you can do about how hard it is to comment on your blog?

Here I go - opening a can of worms…
Perhaps it is my ignorance or niavity, but I don’t really understand how what Blount wrote can warrant a full-fledged attack and accusations of plagarism. I’m neither trying to defend Blount or accuse RPT of being hyper-sensitive (o.k., mabye they are just a little…) - I just don’t get it.
Had Blount written a lot more than just a simple one or two line thought/comparison of Brady/Johnson, etc. I could see it heading towards plagarism, but come on now. The original post from RPT was lengthy and filled with original content - BUT - more than one person has had at least some of these same thoughts. It has even crossed my mind to compare Johnson and Knauss to the Patriots duo. Thank goodness I never wrote them down in public or I’d be accused of plagarism and I had never even visited the RPT site until linking to it from Darren’s blog.
Wait, dang it, I just wrote it down so now I am guilty too.
To me, the more important issue is that RPT claims to want a world full of love. Snipping a bit from their own community guidelines:
“No personal attacks. I have no desire to squelch honest and open debate. But keep it respectful of the other person. A user who insults, belittles, harasses, or in any other fashion hinders the welcoming spirit of this site…”
Calling Blount a moron and dullard seems a bit like “do as I say and not as I do” and in my mind leans further across the line than Blount’s reference to a thought - a thought which certainly isn’t original and simgularly possed by RPT. I’m just a dumb race geek and not privy to the laws of journalism so perhaps there has been a transgression by Blount, but I can say without question the RPT has violated good manners at the very least.
For the record, I concur with all of the viewpoints of RPT on the Chase issue and think Blount is way off base.

Lou:
Allow me to explain.
It is entirely possible Blount came up with the Johnson & Knaus = Brady & Belichick analogy on his own. That said, please not the elapsed time between my post and his. I wrote mine on the fourth. He wrote his on the thirteenth.
While I don’t expect you to believe the following, it is true. I have been told not once, but twice by national NASCAR writers that my blog along with those of several other known bloggers are routinely read by both NASCAR officials and members of the professional sportswriting world that cover the sport. While this does not prove plagiarism took place in this instance, it definitely raises the possibility.
When independent concurrent ideas occur in journalism, be it in blogs or among professionals, and it becomes known to a writer they are following the same path laid down by another, there is a protocol of acknowledgment. You either say “oh well” and not use the idea, or you give proper credit to others for having the same idea, either directly (”Writer X and I have both come up with…”) or indirectly (”As others have said…”). This did not take place in this instance.
As to saying I want one thing and doing another on the blog, due to circumstances beyond my control I’m human. I was already aggravated when I read Blount’s column. When I saw the part about Johnson & Knaus = Brady & Belichick, I admit I lost it. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred I would have taken a far calmer approach in disassembling Blount’s column. This time I didn’t. Sorry if I disappointed anyone.

Just came from RPT, but I’m going back to read this thing you all are so worked up about. Just from my own perspective - journalism and blogging don’t have alot in common. We bloggers link to jounalistic content all the time. If a journalist happens to use inspiration from a blogging source, some attribution would be nice. Doesn’t happen, but would be the thing to do.
